DIY Mosquito Repellent

The thought of putting chemicals on the skin of my children makes me cringe. I have been using essential oils, instead of DEET, to repel mosquitos for years. It’s a very effective and natural way to enjoy the outdoors without using pesticides.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Small, dark, spray bottle (I use 2 oz dark amber)
Witch hazel
Boiled or distilled water
Essential oils that naturally repel insects: (any combination of)
– lemon – lavender – tea tree – citronella – lemongrass- basil –
– mint – lemon eucalyptus – rosemary – ceder – clove –

Here’s how you do it:

Fill a clean spray bottle 50% with boiled water and 50% with witch hazel. Add 40- 60 drops of the essential oils of your choosing. Shake well before each use. Spray on yourself and your kids.

It’s that easy! I have tested this over and over again in my own backyard, on hikes in the woods, and while at barbecues. A pleasant side effect is the spa-like smell instead of the harsh chemical smell. I recently made a batch using lavender, lemon eucalyptus, and citronella, and it worked so well! You can find oils on amazon or at any natural food store. Just make sure they are 100% oil and/or therapeutic grade.

Enjoy and please pass on this useful DIY insect repellent.
